Baba Prem:
Yogacharya
I have known Baba
Prem for the last fifteen years. He has been deeply involved in Yoga
studies and practices for nearly thirty years. His fields of
examination include the main branches of classical Yoga and related
Vedic sciences of Ayurveda and Vedic astrology, as well as the
Vedas themselves. His knowledge of Yoga includes all eight limbs
of yoga, as well as mantra, Bhakti and Jnana. His study of the Vedas
has included the deities of the Rigveda and key Vedic
mantras. He has also joined us for various personal trainings, both
in the United States and in India. He is the author of several books
and many articles on these topics.
Given the range of
his training, experience and teaching – which has little parallel
among Yoga teachers in the West today – we are happy to acknowledge
Baba Prem as a ‘Yogacharya’ or expert teacher of Yoga. We have seen
such titles used by individuals today whose knowledge of Yoga is
limited to asanas of a gymnastic nature or is based upon the number
of their followers, though their teachings may be superficial. Our
use of the term is as one who is trained in classical Yoga, Veda and
Vedanta and is capable of teaching others the essence of this great
tradition at the level of personal practice.
This award has been
given with special reference to Baba Prem’s book Yogic Secrets of
the Vedas, which endeavors to show the deeper Vedic Yoga that
few scholars or even Yogis have been able to unravel.
This testimonial is
not a matter of mere hours of study, technical proficiency or the
ability to attract the media. It reflects from those of us within
the tradition an honoring of individuals who are part of the
tradition as an inner reality.
